A coloring test for my webcomic (BlackJackeline). I know, is not much compared to the old style, but I think it's a new begining for me at the coloring. My goal is to mix some kind of watercolor-like or oilpaint with the old CG style. I'm observing a lot of Kenichi Sonoda's works.
Lineart made by hand, with a Stabilo pen nº 68. Coloring using SAI - Easy Paint Tool (my new passion).
I guess i'll be the first to comment... maybe your putting too much light on certain parts of the color... try starting your base with a dark sienna brown or tan peachy color.. then slowly part by part lighten the areas up with a slightly lighter peachy brown color... with flow at 30% or less.... then with linear dodge with a bigger brush stroke at 1 to 3% flow .. its acts like a substitute for a gradient, but it actually helps the pic get lighter carefully without overdoing the highlights...
the reason for the base to be colored dark is so it would be easy telling which areas need more light... u basically paint with light colors... then start using the brush at 1-3% flow on linear dodge to highlight small areas... i never use this brush that much cause it might ruin the already lighted colors..
this vid here will explain what i said easier k [link] even though its a speedpainting .. try observing why he starts with dark color as his base color...it gradually gets lighter when he adds light colors... don't do this with the brush set on linear dodge... dodge lightly after if u think it needs alittle tiny bit of light... not too much... just a tiny bit of dodge needed to get that effect at 1% flow set on linear dodge... also try color adjust if u hate the color... still never use dodge so much... k its only to higlight tiny areas... cause if u use it too much it will destroy the color...
as for the line colors... i'm not sure if u like black lines.. but if u choose to change the color of your lines... here's a tut for that... since he sorta made one on that which i find weird... ^__^
[link] i think i seen u doin this in the other pic with terry... so no worries...
Now for the good points... i really like the pose and i really like that face she gives off in her expression... ^__^ nice work bro
Yap! I luv this! I learned to make this kind of pic, basically, by observing Yoshihiro Togashi's works (Yu Yu Hakusho - one of my preferred mangas ever...). I don't know if YYH was published in your country, or, I don't know how the english version was published, the layout, and that things, but in the brazilian version, some pages through the manga was filled with portraits and some free hand drawings from the author. And it's a very interesting effect, since it brakes the continuity of the story a bit with a pretty curious result.
But, back to this pic, I like to imagine my characters in some suggestive poses. Personally, I see this pic and think Jackie are thinking "--*Sigh... Wow, last night was really cooool!" :3 And she's looking for her pair from last night (probably wearing his/her clothes before to go away)!
Wow, it's a really interesting way of coloring what you said! I usually do the inverse: first the clear tones and then the darker tones after. Sometimes the middle tones before, and so the darker and, in the sequence, the light. I'll try this, sir, yes!
Specifically about this pic, I'm trying to achieve some kind of fast result, and then this is the reason of the strong/explosion light. Have you saw Burst Angel/Bakuretsu Tenshi manga? Is black & white, yeah, but I keep imagining if that pages were colored. This is the kind of result I want for my comic. But this tips are also very useful for a more detailed painting.
Wow, thanks for this link! This is a good site! Aahah, is the same layout in the english version! I don't know if this is the best example to illustrate what I'm saying, but is the one I can remember now: [link] Ya know, just...
It's so simple, but it's so cool! That girl simply nothing have to do with the continuity or the story , but it's still cool. And you can found this thing at various times through the manga, since the begining -til the end. Mr. Togashi is very versatile, as you can see, and he like to play tricky with all the elements of the narrative - kinda metalanguage, ye know. Unfortunately, he don't draw anymore... Aaaah god!
Hm... As I talked to Dustin, I don't know if people can see my influences on my works, since I don't believe I draw manga, but what can I say... My greatest bases for all the things I draw and write in terms of story, are even Masamune Shirow (you know him), Yuzo Takada (3x3 Eyes), Yoshihiro Togashi, Yukito Kishiro (GUNNM/Battle Angel Alita, Aqua Knight...) and, now, Rei Hiroe (Black Lagoon) and Kenichi Sonoda (Gunsmith Cats, Bubblegum Crisis character design...).
